My wife Rasa and I were in the mood to eat something different from the usual dinner fare. As we could not decide, she suggested dining in Westwood, New Jersey. Arriving in Westwood we decided to dine at an Indian restaurant at 266 Center Street called Downtown Dhaba. When we entered, we were asked by the hostess if we had reservations. We replied that we did not, and for an instant I thought this would be a problem. Our hostess said no problem and sat us at a table. The wait staff was attentive, bringing us menus and pouring ice water into our glasses. When the waitress, Abhilasha came to our table she took our order. My wife asked if the spice level was very hot, and the waitress suggested medium spice for her meal. When we ate our food, this was delightful as the chef had obviously gaged American heat levels of acceptance. Rasa had Chicken Saag, large chunks of chicken smothered in a spinach yogurt sauce. I ordered the Dal Tadka, a blend of yellow lentils and spices which came in a small iron pot. The lentils were properly blended with no whole lentils missed during preparation. Rasa ordered the Saag that had chicken which was tender and perfectly cooked along with a mixture of spices and flavors that were perfectly blended, so no one flavor overpowered the dish. We both shared a yellow lentil cracker-like bread which we dipped into three sauce condiments, one of coriander, one of sweet red pepper, and one which reminded me of Chinese duck sauce. The wait staff catered to our needs, another dropped fork was replaced, and more water quickly. We enjoyed our meal in an ambiance which was quiet and calm. The restaurant has a vigorous take-out service suggesting that this eatery had become a constant dining spot in the community. Therefore, Downtown Dhaba deserves a four-orange rating. Recommended!
