On Saturday October 12, 2024, residents of the west Crooked Hill Road Area were ordered by the Orangetown Police Department to shelter in place as they had been called to handle a situation which could have become tragic. A hand Grenade was found lying on the side of the road. it was unknown at the time whether or not it was capable of exploding. The Orangetown Police Department came and took the weapon to the proper facility where it was examined by explosive experts. As it turned out the grenade was a dummy, a grenade used in military and police training, posing no threat. By early Sunday morning, the shelter in place order had been lifted to the relief of the neighbors. How or why the grenade was found in a residential area is unknown. Perhaps it was a prank played for whatever reason, or someone who came across it in their possession became scared and wished to be rid of it, irresponsibly throwing it out a car window. Whatever the case, if live, this was a close call for the residents of the area. Police are requesting anyone with information to come forward.
